Powered hand saws are becoming a very popular general purpose sawing tool. They are relatively inexpensive with an average price of around $40-45 yet can handle quite a range of jobs in and around the home.
It most certainly beats manually using a hand saw to get through wood and that’s for certain.
All they are really is your typical ordinary hand saw put on steroids through power from an electrical source. Let the saw do the work rather than you having to manually cut through it.
They come in slightly different styles, shapes and sizes depending on what you want to get done. In this article we will review a few of them so as you can decide if they are useful for your own needs. Black and Decker make a few different styles of these and are well priced.
Powered Hand Saws for Wood
Mainly any type of electric powered saw can be used to cut through wood. You can then buy blades that will allow you to cut through metal, and in this case, they can replace the manual work of using a hacksaw. You can also get this type of powered hand saw that can be used for pruning wood and trees. Some of the saws actually come with a couple of different type of blades that will help open up the range of materials that you can cut.
Generally speaking though if you start using one of these you may just be surprised at how effective they are. They are great for chopping through posts, large beams, cutting through pipes and conduit, and as I mentioned dealing with unwanted tree branches. Cutting trees and branches are why most people go for this type of power saw.
In many ways they are similar to reciprocating saws but at about half the price. That is what got me interested in trying them out in the first place. I have put together a table below to give you an idea of what is available in the market right now. Plenty of people buy these and overall are pretty happy with their purchase.

Top 3 Rated Powered Hand Saws
Here we take a quick summary review of the best rated powered hand saws that are around today. There are different models of these but we researched and came up with the 3 best in the market right now. This was based on customer buyer ratings, effectiveness and value for money. Let’s start with the first one which is one from Black & Decker.
Black & Decker PHS550B Handsaw
This one costs around $40-45 and out of all of this type of saw is the best selling one. It can cut wood and metal as it comes with a couple of blades. You also get a storage bag that keeps everything together. This is a corded product so you will need to plug it into a power source.
Quite a few reviewers struggled with actually fitting the blade. Other than that it is a powerful enough saw that has a wide range of uses. Many reviewers bought this one because they wanted an inexpensive saw to deal with branches on trees that they wanted to get rid of.
It comes with a 2-year limited warranty and is rated 4.2 out of 5 stars by over 500 buyers at Amazon. You can check more of these reviews by clicking here.
Black and Decker CHS6000 Cordless
The B&D CHS6000 one above is a corded saw but this one is cordless. It works of a 6 volt motor that comes with a charger, and 2 blades; one for wood and one for metal. This one will also take standard size jigsaw blades so that will make it a lot easier and cheaper to buy replacement blades.
It rates 3.6 out of 5 stars by buyers so to be honest we would not normally include this in our reviews. We did reluctantly as some people do like to have this type of saw but cordless so as they don’t risk cutting cables. This is not a great performer though but might be handy for some smaller jobs.
Here at Tool And Go we would not recommend this one unless you simply have to have a cordless hand saw.
SKIL 2352-01 Multi-Cutter
We liked this one a little better and it is cordless. It is pretty limited in use though but handy for a range of smaller jobs. These would include cutting through wallpaper, vinyls, leather, plastic packaging and even carpet. For us this is more a useful multi-purpose tool rather than a saw in the truest definition of sawing.
It will cut through just about anything that is less than 1/4″ thick. So yes it can come in as a handy little tool but would be useless for any major type of cutting. A good way to compare it is to say it is a fast pair of scissors. Plenty of people buy this product and a lot of people use it for recycling old cardboard boxes and that annoying plastic packaging that so many products come in. It is quite ironic that the saw itself actually comes in the same annoying plastic. …maybe it is something for you to test your saw out on.
Rockwell RK3440K Versacut Circular Saw
This is an interesting one that many people buy. There are close to 600 buyer reviews over at Amazon and it is highly rated with 4.3 out of 5 stars. This is a powerful little beast that has a built in laser guide. It can get through many materials and can even deal with tiles.
It can handle wood like 2 x 2 and 3/4″ plywood so that is pretty good. It does to nice clean cuts and is good for many general purpose jobs. We don’t think this would replace your circular saw, but it is a lot handier to pull it out if you need something done quickly.
